Gum Graft
Anchorage, AK

When most people think about a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile, they tend to focus on the teeth. While your teeth are an important part of your mouth, they are not the only factor. The health and appearance of your gums also play a significant role. If you have suffered gum recession, the quality of your smile and the health of your mouth suffer. Nicholas W. Feldman, DDS, MBA can help with a gum graft.

The Role of Your Gums

Your gums play many important roles in your mouth. Healthy gums provide a tight, protective seal around your teeth. This seal keeps bacteria and other debris from falling below the gum line. The tissue protects the roots of your teeth from uncomfortable sensitivity. Your gums also play an integral role in the quality of your smile.

Causes of Gum Recession

There are several issues that can lead to gum recession. Common causes include
•  Gum disease. Bacteria that fall below your gum line cause the tissue to swell and pull away from your teeth. The tissue begins to die off, and the gum line recedes.
•  Aggressive brushing, which wears away sensitive tissue.
•  Misaligned teeth.
•  Bruxism, or the grinding and clenching of your teeth.
•  Getting older. As you age, your gums naturally begin to recede.

What is a Gum Graft?

A gum graft is a surgical procedure that is performed to restore a natural gum line, improving both the health of your mouth and the beauty of your smile. This procedure involves harvesting tissue from either another location in your body, typically the roof of your mouth, or from a donor and transplanting the tissue over the affected teeth.

A gum graft is performed under a local anesthetic. Sedation may also be provided to help you feel calm and relaxed. The harvested tissue is sutured into place over the affected teeth. Your natural gum tissue fuses with the grafted tissue, which then forms a healthy, natural seal around your teeth.

Types of Gum Grafts

There are a few different types of gum grafts that may be performed. During your initial consultation, we go over your grafting options to determine the best type to meet your needs. Types of gum grafts include
•  Connective tissue grafts. A connective tissue graft is one that involves harvesting tissue from the roof of your mouth. We first create a small incision in your palate and remove the tissue from underneath. After the necessary tissue is harvested and your graft complete, the small flap is closed, leaving a small wound at the roof of your mouth. This type of graft is often used to provide root coverage.
•  Free gingival grafts. A free gingival graft is another type of graft that involves harvesting tissue from the roof of your mouth. The tissue, however, is taken directly from your palate. This leaves a larger, open wound as a result. A free gingival graft is often used when there is a need for keratinized tissue.
•  Pedicle grafts. A pedicle graft is one that uses your surrounding gum tissue. Small incisions are made in your gums, and we are able to rearrange the tissue to cover the affected teeth. With this type of graft, your blood vessels are left intact, which can aid in faster healing.

A gum graft helps to restore the quality of your smile and the health of your mouth, which aids in greatly improving your overall quality of life. For more information, and to schedule your appointment, call Nicholas W. Feldman, DDS, MBA at (907) 802-4519 today.
