3D Cone Beam

What is Dental 3D Cone Beam CT Scan?


Dental 3D cone beam CT is a scan used by our dentist when traditional x-rays don't provide all the information we need to make a diagnosis. We use this equipment on a limited basis because radiation exposure is more significant than it is with traditional dental x-rays.

This technology uses 3D imaging that helps us more accurately diagnose and plan treatment for conditions such as:
•  Impacted teeth
•  Temporomandibular disorders (TMD or TMJ)
•  Dental implants
•  Reconstructive surgery
•  Pain

How to Prepare for a 3D Cone Beam Scan


There is no special preparation required when we use a 3D cone beam CT scan. You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes for your appointment and remove any metal objects such as jewelry, glasses, hairpins, hearing aids or dentures, which can affect the results of the scan. We may give you a gown to wear during the procedure. Our female patients will need to remove bras with metal clasps and any oral piercings.

The 3D cone beam CT scan has the shape of a cone and moves around the patient to take the images of the jawbone, soft tissue, nasal cavity, and sinuses. You will probably sit while the scan is taking place.

It is essential that you advise us if you are or could be pregnant.

How Does 3D Cone Beam Work?


The 3D cone beam scan rotates around your head in 360-degrees. You will sit on a chair (or lay on a table), and we place you in the position that best allows us to examine the problematic area, depending on your condition. The machine takes multiple images of that area and then we can put them together to get a better look at what is happening. Just like with other traditional x-rays we ask that you remain still, in the exact position we place you in, and hold your breath while the scan takes the pictures. The process only takes between 20 to 40 seconds to take a full mouth set of x-rays and less than 10 seconds for a local scan of the mandible or jawbone.

The arm in the 3D cone beam scanner takes between 150 and 200 two-dimensional high-resolution images that are put together to create three-dimensional pictures of a specific area of your mouth. Looking at these images will allow us to understand your condition better and implement a treatment plan that will address your oral health problems.

One of the most significant benefits of using this technology is that it gives us a clearer picture of why you are feeling specific symptoms. Sometimes, traditional x-rays are inconclusive, and we need more detailed information to diagnose a patient and treat them.
